Well, this is another of the unexpected beauties on our ‘Brownwood’ tour of Midwest Texas in February, 2015. The courthouse, like Stephens County Courthouse, exudes oil money. Yes, it is Moderne with Art Deco touches – but taken to such a high degree. The symbolic eagles on the corners are classic. And all the touches on the exterior make for a harmonious and great example of the style. This courthouse is the home to the ‘Old Rip’, the horned toad that was sealed in the cornerstone for years – and then was found alive when the cornerstone was opened. Go to Eastland for the entire story.
Inside – there’s a lot of style in the hallways. The ceilings and walls have impressive design details. The floors are polished granite (?). The ceiling lamps are very beautiful art deco lights. Then there’s the beautiful ironwork found in the heating vent in the hallway.
The courtroom has tons of dark polished wood. There are some design features up on the walls and near the ceiling. There actually is a second courtroom, it is the home of the Texas 11th Court of Appeals. It is very similar to the County District courtroom, with differences made for the fact that multiple judges sit in on hearings.
