Built – 1937
Architect – David S Castle
Style – Moderne
Photos taken 11/9/15
How to pronounce the county name – we were told it’s Irion (Ear-E-on).
Okay, not much to make this courthouse standout. It’s rather a stark representation of the moderne style of the 1930’s. There some motif styling outside. And inside, the moderne is followed through. Didn’t get to take courtroom photos, as the Commisioner’s Court was meeting. Don’t think you missed much. I did take a photo in the jury room – it pretty well reflected the courtroom. What this court did have was placement. While Mertzon isn’t really that big – even if it were, it would be hard to miss this courthouse. It sits high on a hill overlooking town and highway. Standing in front of the courthouse – you get a great view of much of the county.
