After a bus trip of about an hour – we arrived in Bayeux – home of the historical and well-known Bayeux Tapestries. Please note that while we were able to see the tapestries, photos were forbidden, so I’ve included a few photos from a book I bought displaying the tapestries. They’re worth the trip.
From Bayeux.fr: The medieval city of Bayeux boasts a rich architectural heritage. Beside the cathedral in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, Bayeux retains beautifully preserved timer-framed houses, mansions flanked with towers, vast town houses and elegant private residences. … and then there’s the Bayeux Tapestries: Each year visitors from around the world come to the museum to admire this key work of the Middle Ages. Listed “World Heritage” by UNESCO, the 70 metres long Tapestry recounts the Conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy.
and from Visit Bayeux, the Tapestry, the cathedral and the museum – Normandy Tourism, France (normandie-tourisme.fr) – A visit to the Bayeux Tapestry is the highlight for most tourists to the town. Bayeux’s tapestry dominates notions of the place, to be sure, but as you arrive here, it’s the splendid cathedral that dominates the scene and signals that you’re entering a glorious historic city. The grand bishop’s palace beside the cathedral has been turned into a museum. Spectacular historic houses nearby have been converted into fine restaurants and boutiques.
While there – visited the Patissiere de la reine Matilde: Interesting place – and certainly an elevated bakery by almost any standard.
