Of course, Dickens County has been something I’ve looked forward to for sometime. Maybe the namesake and I have some common ancestry. This county is one of the least populated counties in Texas – with maybe about 500 people. The courthouse has been remodeled at least twice – removing the hipped roof & central tower. Some restoration & stabilization occurred in 2014. they seem to have some idea of a complete restoration with the hip roof and tower sometime in the future depending on funding. The wood ceilings give a historic touch. And the courtroom was quite unusual – with the judge’s bench in a corner. I’m not sure I’ve seen that in any other courthouse. They were preparing for a trial – but the sheriff invited us in for photos before they started. Different reception than we get in some other counties. There is a modern county office annex located behind the original courhouse.
