It’s getting late on Sunday, so I think I’ll go ahead and make my weekly Sunday post before the day is gone. I have TONS of stuff I’ve been preparing to upload – but right now, really only the new 13 uploaded counties are accessible. I’ll soon follow with the retired courthouses, historic jails and a few town pictures that go with these counties. In addition, I’ll be posting The Painted Churches later this week as well. They are an amazing sight to be found in the central areas of Texas and represent mostly the Czech heritage, with some German thrown in.
The thirteen counties I’ve added today are: Kendall, Kenedy, Kinney, Kimble, Kleberg, Lampasas, LaSalle, Lavaca, Lee, Leon, Limestone, Live Oak and Llano. I’ll be adding the usual facts and self-views on these counties within the next few days, but you’ll have to be the judge if there’s anything extraordinary here. The Lavaca County Courthouse must have been restored, and the both exterior and interior views were noteworthy. Especially the floor! I’m really thinking a quilt pattern could be made from that floor. Kendall is old and solid (it’s the second oldest courthouse in Texas). Lampasas and Llano are 2 turn of the century courthouses – very representative of the time and style. You might also notice that Limestone and Live Oak seem to be cut from the same cutter. They’re both classical revival and red brick and have much in common. the LaSalle County Courthouse was impressive in that it is probably the most representative of the art deco style – at least that we’ve seen (with the exception of maybe Jefferson County) And then there’s the Lee County Courthouse – Romanesque Revival – with the ubiquitous corner entry. This courthouse was being restored at the time of our visit. The outside was almost totally done – but there was still some to be done inside – we may have to return someday. Enjoy!
