County Seat – Orange
Built – 1937
Style – Moderne
Architect – C. H. Page
Pictures Taken – September 23, 2006
We stopped to visit this courthouse on a return trip from Mother’s (Florida). It was a weekend, so no interior photos were taken – though it might be worth a visit. This is a little different from other moderne-style buildings. Brick was used and the entrance was set off by a large black marble encasement. This deviates from most other moderne buildings that were generally one color and used large smooth cuts of stone for the exterior. I liked the building and wished we could have gone inside. The grounds were well laid out with an interesting statuary of children playing.
Orange itself seems to still have been reeling from an earlier hurricane. I want to say it was hurricane Ike, but I’m not sure. The area got hammered, but it was at about the same time as Katrina, so the devastation was not as publicized.
