This was one of those surprises you get when wandering about Texas and visiting the courthouses. I’d somehow missed the fact that this courthouse had been renovated. In the back of my mind, I thought it might have, but I was ready to see the courthouse as ‘renovated’ in 1938 – sans clock tower. So it was with delight we saw the courthouse tower as we entered town. With the restoration being completed in 2002, I don’t know how I was unawares – but there you go.
It is a gem of a courthouse. Great detail in the woodwork. The tower is impressive, and the goddess on top of the tower is the original. It had been stored after the tower was removed.
The tiles were nice – as were the pressed tin ceilings. The courthouse was nice – with a wonderful pendulum clock and a story about a shoot out that occurred there in 1905. It seems the sheriff and a former sheriff had a shootout in the courthouse – with the former sheriff losing his life. The sheriff was arrested for murder – but I don’t know how that turned out.
