The courthouse was almost totally destroyed in a devasting fire on New Year’s Day, 1993. See this article for more info and photos. It is said that the county’s decision to rebuild, using only the remaining 4 limestone walls, was the beginning of the courthouse restoration movement in Texas. And what a marvelous job they did. I really don’t have complete reference on this, but I believe they had detailed original plans and those were used to faithfully reproduce this Dodson gem. If you’re making a short list of great Texas County Courthouses – this one will make many lists.
