Well, what a surprise found hidden deep in the East Texas piney woods. Newton is a sleepy town – not much going on in its town square. And there stands this very neat and regal courthouse. Inside, it is the epitome of a Texas Historical Commission restoration. But his one is a little different – the only other similar situation I know of is Hill County. The 1904 courthouse was burned in a devastating fire in 2000. All that remained was the exterior walls and a few of the first floor walls. All about 12 years, and more than one delay and contractor disputes, the rebuilt courthouse was rededicated in December, 2012. I only found out all of this as I was preparing to post this article. I thought the restoration had too much of a ‘new’ feel to it. Regardless, this is a very nice courthouse and worth a visit.
