County Seat – Decatur
Architect – J. Riely Gordon
Style – Romanesque Revival
Built – 1896
This is one of the gems of North Texas. We visited Clem’s neice & stayed in Arlington. We were able to visit 6 county courthouses north of Dallas. I truly believe that, including Tarrant & Dallas Counties – the area around DFW contains some of the most notable courthouses in all of Texas. The styles vary, but the quality is the same from county to county. And Wise County did not disappoint. This beautiful Romanesque by Gordon does not pale when compared to others of similar style. I especially like the very light and delicate balconies which stood out nicely against the heavy stone and style that is Romanesque. Inside, though not renovated, is in good shape and certainly helps evoke that dark, medieval, cellar feel that come to me when I see these late 19th century jewels. The tower is a wild display of turrents, towers and clocks. And on each side of the corner entry you will find elaborate cared designs in the marlbe noting the 1896 date of construction.
