County Seat – Refugio
Built – 1919
Architect – Atlee B. Ayres
Style – Texas Renaissance
Photos taken – April 22, 2005 and May 26, 2011
We took these photos on two separate trips. The first one was while on a camping trip to Lake Corpus and the second while on a camping/courthouse trip to Victoria. We stopped the second time because we weren’t sure if we had done the interior on the first visit. To be honest, it isn’t one of those courthouses that warranted two trips – but we were in the area….
The architect was Atlee Ayres. Mr. Ayres was a well-known and respected architect out of San Antonio. The style (Tex. Renaissance) just doesn’t do a lot for me. The building is rather plain, with an ornate porch and an impressive entry hall with dual staircases. The southern wing of the building seems to have been the jail – at least on the top floor.
